CIT Program Overview

Our Counselor in Training (CIT) Program is designed for students entering 7th and 8th grade who see themselves as student leaders and are interested in developing the skills necessary to become a camp counselor when they are older. Throughout this program, CITs spend the majority of their day working with their head counselor. Here, they get to help out and run occasional activities/games for younger campers.

CITs will also have the opportunity to develop their own elective, and will plan everything necessary and lead the elective at the end of the week. This gives them great experience to test and develop their leadership skills.

CITs will have daily meetings with the CIT Program Lead to ask questions, discuss strategies, and generally learn the skills necessary that are needed to be a counselor in the future.

Things to note about the CIT Program:

  • This is NOT a counselor position; CITs are not old enough to work and are not old enough to be in charge of children. For all intents and purposes, CITs are campers and are expected to follow all rules that apply to campers.

  • The main purpose of this program is to allow CITs to learn the skills necessary to be a counselor in the future. CITs will receive hands-on practice and instruction on how to be a counselor and will assist Head Counselors in all aspects of camp. If your 7th or 8th grader is looking to actively participate in camp activities, this is not the program for them.

  • Participation in the CIT program does NOT guarantee future employment. However, we love the idea of hiring Camp Viva alumni once they are old enough!

  • Children do not need to have attended Camp Viva in the past to participate in the CIT program.
